La Belle Laide

Aloha, my name is JulesKD and my real home is here. I use this just to follow people and things I think are nifty.

Before anything else I'm a novelist, in search of an agent, growing a pair refining my query letter.

Stuff I care about: Being art, through Kung Fu (choy lei fuht, broadsword and staff, light-contact sparring, trapping, and forms,) and through dance (Hula/Polynesian.) Human rights, equality, and the freedom of choice for all. Health and wellness, not only for me, but for everyone. I think you have to fight for those things and not just bitch about them. Science, animal rights, availability of information, sustainable living. Movies, music, art, and how best to have fun and adventures. Laughter, friends, joy. I root for the underdog.

Stuff I don't care about: Make-up, hair, shoes, purses, what's fashionable, cooing at myself in the mirror, who's banging whom.

Oh, and finally I'm a massage therapist and I love my job! So I could tell you a story, make you feel awesome, dance a Hula, or I could leg-sweep you and punch you in the face. YOU NEVER KNOW.

Ask me anything

I think this ongoing debate on gender inequality in the film industry is fantastic. I am inspired to see such strong individuals putting forward such great points. Even if we might not always agree, it’s brilliant to see that our generation is engaged and wanting change.

What Sarah said. THIS. (Which is also what I just said, too! GMTA etc.)

Relevant to this is The Bechdel Test. In any given movie, do two female characters, with actual names, ever discuss anything aside from a man? (You can do this with people of color discussing anything aside from white people, too.)

As this blog says,

Men are still primarily the studio executives, the writers, the directors and the major decision makers in the industry and they tell stories that they can relate to.  Not surprisingly this results in most movies focusing on men and men’s stories.  So while it might make sense that one specific film like Moneyball is male dominated and male centered and they wouldn’t or couldn’t incorporate women as major characters, the problem is that the vast majority of movies made in Hollywood are also male centered and male dominated. It’s depressingly clear that Hollywood doesn’t prioritize roles for women and isn’t interested in telling women’s stories.
